30 Year Anniversary of "Black Hawk Down"

Night Stalker Foundation

Karl Maier and Keith Jones flew their MH-6 Little Bird, call sign Star 41,  into the crash site of Super 61, landing in an alley between the crash site and the approaching enemy. Jones leapt out and ran to the aid of two Delta Force Operators.

Maier continued to pilot the aircraft, holding it in position and engaging the enemy with his MP-5K machinegun from the cockpit. Jones dragged the wounded operators into the back of Star 41 and they immediately took off.

Maier and Jones then returned to the fight and continued the effort to save lives, actions that would lead to the award of the Silver Star.

Dear NSF Family and Friends,

We look forward to hosting you on the 19th of October at One World Trade Center. You will hear a never-before assembled panel of warriors discuss the mission, and why they had the fight of their lives that day.

The attendees will include Karl Maier, pilot of Star 41.

Karl H. Maier, CW5 (Retired)

Maier served as the Flight Lead for operations in Somalia and was subsequently awarded the Silver Star and two Air Medals with “V” Device.  CW5 Maier’s Silver Star was received for actions during the recovery of personnel injured after an MH-60 was shot down, during which he used his personal weapon to engage a numerically superior enemy while his Copilot extracted two of the downed MH-60 Crewmembers.

Chief Warrant Officer Five Karl H. Maier was born in California in 1956. He originally enlisted in the United States Army in December 1975 and attended Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, followed by Advanced Individual Training at the Military Police School at Fort McClellan, Alabama. After graduating from Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia, CW5 Maier was assigned to the 118th Military Police Company (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He then served as a Military Policeman from April 1976 to December 1978. After that assignment and following a short break in service, he attended Warrant Officer Candidate School and Flight School at Fort Rucker, Alabama.

In March 1984, CW5 Maier completed Warrant Officer Candidate School and successfully graduated from Flight School with ratings in the TH-55, UH-1, and OH-58 helicopters. He was then assigned to A Troop, 1st Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. During that time, he served as a Scout Platoon Pilot in Command and Instructor Pilot.

In July 1987, CW5 Maier assessed favorably for service in the 160th Special Operations Aviation Group (Airborne). After completion of Green Platoon and the Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) Course, CW5 Maier was assigned to A Company, 1st Battalion as an MH-6 Pilot. He progressed quickly and served in multiple positions inside the company including Fully Mission Qualified (FMQ) Pilot, Flight Lead (FL), Maintenance Test Pilot, Instructor Pilot (IP), and Standardization Pilot (SP). CW5 Maier deployed in support of operations in Panama (Operation JUST CAUSE), the Persian Gulf (Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM), and Somalia (Operation GOTHIC SERPENT).
