30 Year Anniversary Of "Black Hawk Down" Meet Our Panelist Dan Jollota

Night Stalker Foundation

Super 68 was Dan Jollota's call sign on the 3rd of October in 1993. Flying his MH-60 Black Hawk with Herb Rodriguez, Kenny Hickman, and Darrell McKeehan, Super 68 raced to the aid of Super 61 after it went down.

Hovering near the crash site, Jollota fast-roped the Search and Rescue (SAR) team to the ground. As members of the SAR team were descending the ropes, Super 68 was hit with a Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG), but Jollota and the crew held their position until all of the team were safely on the ground.

With blades ripped up and the helicopter ravaged with shrapnel, Jollota limped his aircraft back to the airfield. Without delay, Dan and his crew then quickly prepared one of the spare Blackhawk helicopters, climbed aboard, and returned to the fight.

Dear NSF Family and Friends,

We look forward to hosting you on the 19th of October at One World Trade Center.  You will hear a never-before assembled panel of warriors discuss the mission, and why they had the fight of their lives that day. The panel will include Chief Warrant Officer Five (Retired) Daniel R. Jollota, pilot of Super 68.

Daniel R. Jollota, CW5 (Retired)

CW5 (R) Daniel Jollota joined the Army as a Military Policeman in 1976, attended Special Forces Qualification Course in 1978, and served as a Combat Engineer and Demolition expert until 1981.  Dan then spent four years jumping out of airplanes with the Army Golden Knights.  He attended Warrant Officer Candidate and Flight School in 1986.

CW5 Jollota’s aviation career began as a UH-60 Blackhawk pilot in Korea.  In 1988, he began pursuing more challenging assignments with Special Operations.  He was assigned to Panama, participating in his first of many combat actions during Operation Just Cause (capture of Manual Noriega).  In 1990, he was assigned to 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR) and deployed in support of operations in EUCOM and AFRICOM, including Operation Restore Hope in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1993 (Blackhawk Down).  For those six years he served as an Instructor Pilot and Flight Lead in the Armed / Assault Blackhawk program.  Desiring more, Dan assessed and was assigned to Flight Concepts Division, where he served for ten years (1996 – 2006) in multiple roles and locations.  From 2006 until 2010, Dan commanded the 2nd Aviation Flight Detachment, providing rotary and fixed wing support to the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY.  Following this tour, he assessed at age 52 and was selected to the Department of Defense Field Research Activity, where he served as a fixed wing aviator and Command Chief Warrant Officer.   CW5 Jollota’s operational locations include SOUTHCOM, CENTCOM, EUCOM, and AFRICOM, also numerous rotations in Afghanistan, Iraq and multiple National Command Authority directed contingency missions.  CW5 Jollota retired from the Army in June 2016 with 40 years of continuous active duty.  He is currently assigned as a contract pilot with Pegasus Technology Incorporated, located Green Cove Springs, FL.
